Istanbul Hosts Memorial Seminar Honoring Allama Tabataba’i’s Intellectual Legacy

A memorial seminar marking the 44th anniversary of the passing of renowned Shia philosopher and exegete Allama Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabataba’i has been held in Istanbul, shedding light on his pivotal role in shaping contemporary Islamic thought.

Hawzah News Agency- The event, organized by the Kawthar Academy and titled “Allama Tabataba’i’s Position and Scientific Achievements in Contemporary Islamic Thought,” convened scholars, researchers, and students on Saturday at the Kawthar Cultural Center.

The program opened with a recitation of the Holy Qur’an followed by the screening of a documentary outlining Allama Tabataba’i’s life, his groundbreaking Qur’anic exegesis Al-Mizan, and the philosophical-mystical underpinnings of his scholarly approach.

In his opening remarks, Yusuf Tazegun said the initiative aims to “preserve and transmit the Islamic intellectual heritage to future generations,” adding that Allama Tabataba’i’s works remain essential guides for Muslim thinkers navigating today’s intellectual and social challenges.

Turkish researcher and writer Musa Güneş, the keynote speaker, delivered an in-depth analysis of the Allama’s methodology, highlighting his integration of rational inquiry, transmitted texts, philosophical reasoning, and mystical intuition. Güneş emphasized that Allama Tabataba’i’s multidimensional approach to Qur’anic interpretation provides valuable insights into modern ethical, social, and political issues.

Drawing on examples from Al-Mizan, he underscored the relevance of Allama Tabataba’i’s thought for scholars across disciplines—from theology and jurisprudence to philosophy and social sciences—and discussed his intellectual links to Mulla Sadra and the evolution of Sadrian philosophy in the modern era.

The seminar also featured an interactive session with young researchers, who raised questions about applying the Allama’s methodological principles to contemporary challenges and the need to broaden global access to his works through translation and interdisciplinary scholarship.

Concluding the event, organizers announced that the seminar forms part of a continuing series of academic programs to be held by Kawthar Academy in the coming months. They also outlined future initiatives, including translation projects, specialized workshops, and collaborative research efforts aimed at further introducing Allama Tabataba’i’s intellectual heritage to broader audiences.
